Scientifically Formulated for Preoperative Patients

"...Having worked the last twelve years of my career as an RN in Pre, intra and PACU in Ortho I have heard every complaint, seen the discomfort and the unhealthful effects from this ridiculous fast. When in pre-op, I would often call the anesthesiologist and ask (sometimes having to beg) to at least let me start a D5LR on the patient to relieve the headaches of which so many patients complained, most especially in the afternoons and/or when the cases were running late. I would always give my arguments when I was denied, and generally, the anesthesiologist would "give in" and the patient would be grateful to at least get some relief from the headache. I ALWAYS (unless medical reasoning dictated against it) wound hand D5LR as the second bag in PACU as it alleviated so much nausea, which was a common complaint, narcotics notwithstanding!

I hope each and every ambulatory surgery center and in patient surgical areas are using your product. It is one of the BIGGEST advances in patient care in this field in my lifetime, from the perspective of a perioperative RN.

I am proud to say I have worked with you and feel blessed to have had the opportunity to have some stimulating and always knowledge imparting conversations with you!

Good luck on your continued success..."

Clearfast is an isotonic carbohydrate-rich beverage with added supplements addressing preoperative hydration and nutritional needs.

Over 80 million surgical and diagnostic procedures, requiring some form of anesthesia or sedation, are performed annually in the U.S.A. Though the risk of death or disability from the aspiration of stomach contents is extremely low, a majority of patients are still subjected to traditional, rigorous preoperative fasting protocols. Total abstinence typically starts at midnight prior to the day of surgery – no matter the actual time of the scheduled procedure. A recent article in the Association of PeriOperative Registered Nurses Journal estimates the average patient’s fasting period to be 11 hours. And, while prolonged fasting from solids can be clinically justified, similar fasting from clear liquids cannot be. The intake of 400mL, of a 12.5% carbohydrate-rich drink two hours prior to surgery did not increase residual gastric volume (RGV) or acidity, but improved patients’ well-being and comfort.

Carbohydrates - Uses maltodextrin, an easily digested carbohydrate that helps to replenish glycogen depleted by catabolism related to fasting and surgery. Earlier studies show that the intake of a 12.5% carbohydrate-rich drink two hours prior to surgery did not increase residual gastric volume (RGV) or acidity, but improved patients’ well-being and comfort.

Electrolytes - Contains sodium and potassium to replenish the body’s fluid and electrolyte levels after dehydration caused by fasting.

Vitamin A - Acts as an antioxidant and is necessary for function and repair of epithelial tissue.

Selenium - A trace mineral that acts as an antioxidant and is essential for healthy immune function. When combined with Zinc may reduce the risk of infections.

Zinc - A trace mineral, essential for protein synthesis, that plays a well documented role in wound healing.

Clearfast® takes the guesswork out of preoperative fasting.
